京において発展した飾り金具の職人の手になる、追儺の場面を彫り描いた鐔。
今では節分の行事として定着しているが、古くは災厄や疫病を祓って新年を迎えるための宮中行事。
災厄を鬼に見立てて豆や勝栗を蒔いたもので、この鐔では平安時代の頼光四天王に数えられる坂田金時をモデルとしている。
赤銅(しゃくどう)地を肉彫に仕上げ、鬼に豆を投げつける金時の姿を金と素(す)銅(あか)の色絵で表している。
力自慢の武者として知られる金時の表情が、素銅の色合いで一際厳しい。
